Cirque du Soleil's JOYÀ showcase offers a unique combination, designed to engage all five senses. Staged in the intimate setting of the Vidanta Theater at Playa del Carmen, JOYÀ draws inspiration both from the migration of the monarch butterfly and Mayan myth. The show tells the story of an elderly scientist and his granddaughter, who embark on a quest to uncover the secrets of life and pass down the knowledge of eras in order to preserve it.

The Story

The show follows the adventures of a rebellious teenage girl who finds herself in a mysterious jungle within her grandfather's world. As a biologist, the grandfather is determined to continue his relentless pursuit of life’s meaning and his passion for the natural world. As they go on this journey, they are assisted by the masters: half-human, half-animal creatures, influenced by ancient Mayan iconography.

JOYÀ doesn’t just tell a story, it immerses the audience in a complete sensory experience. Upon arrival at the Vidanta Theater, guests are greeted by an ambiance that mirrors the flowing water and dense jungle that surrounds it. The theater itself won the prestigious Building Project of the Year Award from Grupo Expansión and Obras Magazine. 

The experience begins before the show, with a Mayan fire passage—a ritual involving fire dancing with religious significance—setting the tone for the adventure ahead. As the dinner is served for those with a dinner & show ticket, a pre-show musical number takes place and gives a little extra time to arrive.

The performance itself is a compelling spectacle. Highlights include a breathtaking dual aerial strap performance, an intense pirate attack, an Icarian game number, mesmerizing aqua dance routines, and a final trampoline act that incorporates a full trampoline wall.
